June 2011 Weaver editorial – From the Pastor
“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”
Mark 13:32 NIV

If you are reading this then the “rapture” did not happen on May 21, or you missed it. I am not sure if you missed it you would be reading it either – not quite up on all the end-time theories, etc. One young man asked on Facebook, “If you believe in the rapture on May 21 can I have your stuff since you are not going to be needing it?”

I listened to an interview on the radio with one of the proponents of the May 21 rapture. He was convinced that the Bible revealed the date to be May 21, 2011. He noted that a major earthquake would happen which would include the whole world. He was serious. He quoted verses to prove his claim. He is ready.

Now, I wonder what people like him do with Mark 13:32. Was Jesus wrong? Did Jesus not understand God? Or, was Jesus just speaking to those in his day – God was keeping this a secret from one generation and not another?

When we arrived in New Hampshire in 1988 there was a poster on the back of a street sign saying that Jesus would return on October 31, 1988. When we left New Hampshire for the Philippines in 1998 the faded remains of the poster were still there. I am not sure that it did much for the integrity of the Church. I was not sure whether I wanted to have it left as a reminder or if I wanted to slip out at night and take it down to stop the embarrassment of the Church.

We, the Church, have been called to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, set at liberty those who are oppressed and to preach the year of the Lord. We have been called to be the arms, legs, eyes and ears of Christ on this earth. We pray each Sunday that God's kingdom comes on earth as it is in heaven – meaning that we need to act like God's kingdom is here and now – not there later. There are still hungry to be fed, etc. There are still wars that need to cease, prejudices that need to be challenged—but it is difficult to do this when many in the world are shaking their heads because the Church is setting dates and getting them wrong and not feeding, clothing, etc.

We yell, shout, “But that is not us. That is not who we are.” The world does not make that distinction. What the world needs to see is our working together, building together and uniting as One for the sake of Christ and the Gospel. It is not our saying that they are wrong but our living that they are wrong – our living out the faith – our living out the Good News of the Gospel. Our walking together, not fighting among ourselves.

If we are still here it means we still have time to be the Church Christ has called us to be. Can we be that Church?
